Welcome Back!
Welcome back everyone! Boy, I am sure glad to be back with the kids today- their little sense of humors are truly something to miss!
I started off the day today giving them exactly 5 minutes of "talk" time, in which they told their friends all about what they did over Thanksgiving break.
Then, we started a month long unit of Random Acts of Kindness. The students were excited today when we talked about kindness, and how being kind truly circles around, and pays itself forward. We watched a short clip on kindness, and talked about how it changes our "everyday." We broke into collaborative groups to create skits that explain kindness, and will eventually put them on in front of other classes. Parents were also assigned homework, and the students loved that the parents were actually getting homework for once! (Some requested that parents always get a "little" homework!)
I also added a video of the homework, because it was a little tricky lesson!

More digital slide-shows all student created!
I sent the camera home with Aleyah over spring break, and when she came back, I showed her how to do a slideshow...and she did awesome!

Acting out Poetry
Two Little Apples
Two little apples hanging on a tree,
Two little apples smiling at me.
I shook that tree as hard as I could.
Down came the apples. Mm! Mm! Good!

My oh My, what a day! Publisher's Party & Skype!
We had a fantastic day. We had a publishing party where parents and families came and celebrated our writing accomplishments. We read our pieces of writing, and we did SO great! I was really impressed by their dedication, patience, and hard work. We also got to SKYPE a class from Canada today, which was really neat!

Reader Leaders
Every Wednesday day I choose a reader to be the "leader." It's normally a student who has done their best job all week focusing and following along as we read. This week I chose Noah, and he did an awesome job! Enjoy the little blurb!

Indoor Recess & Singing High Frequency
Rain, Rain, Go Away...or we will just sing and dance away! We had to have indoor recess today, and the kids voted on musical chairs...accompanied by Justin Bieber music!
Also, during our Reading Block we just love singing our high-frequency words. ENJOY!

Penguins/Pingüino
Today was a day that we studied penguins! We studied their habitats, their climate preference, and learned about different types of penguins. We read a few stories, and watched a short video on Brain Pop about the Emperor Penguins. After learning so much our brains hurt, we made a fun little penguin craft. After making the penguin craft-step by step, I let the kids take over the camera. I allowed 2 kids to be the camera operators, and make a video documenting what some of the kids learned. So cool. This is the first video they've made...so please excuse the shakiness. Practice makes perfect! :)

Oh, Drama!
We read a story of the week, and I split the kids up into 2 different groups. It was their responsibility to dictate and delegate parts of the story. I thought this was a fun way to retell our story of the week, "Beth's Job." Beth, is a girl who doesn't like her class job of watering the plants, she'd much rather hold the flag, be the line leader, or even feed the bunny...until her plant blooms! We split it up into 2 parts so that everyone could be a part of it! Enjoy!

Classroom Newsletter Week of 10/7
Reading:
We love poetry!
Every week I make sure the kids can appreciate rhythm in a poem. We are still learning, but having SO much fun with it. I also let the students be the leaders by the end of the week, while I assist. They think it's the coolest thing, ever to get to lead the lessons. We practiced short /e/ sounds this week, and reviewed 6 high frequency words.
Math:
We FINALLY finished Chapter 3! Wahoo! Now we are on to Chapter 4, where we will learn all about subtraction strategies. (New homework packet being sent home, today!)
Writing:
We practiced Small Moments more, and zoomed in on the most special part of our stories, to add more details or "sprinkles" of information.
Science/Social Studies:
We have been celebrating Hispanic Heritage all month long, so this week we learned all about CUBA. We learned about the island, folklore, and even different cultural traditions such as "salsa" dancing. Your child can do the basic step, ask them to show you!
Extra, Extra, Read All About It!-If you ever have ANY questions or concerns, and would ever like a phone or face to face conference, please let me know...I really value communication and making sure all of my parents are well informed

Snippets of the Debate
This debate was pretty awesome! The firsties loved watching it, and listening to both sides of the story. I was pretty impressed!
As part of their reading group, these students are to gather and collect data to prove a point, and win the Friday morning debate.
One student was trying to prove that TV is better than books, and the other 2 students are trying to prove that BOOKS are better than TV!
I do have to say, both sides were pretty convincing, however books did win overall.
