Small Group + Bendaroos

Some of my favorite things are the simple things. This small group loved the bendaroos (wikki stix) to build words! I loved it too.

Learning Spanish- Lion, Pig

My wonderful husband stopped by school today to drop off a sweet-tea (much needed caffiene + sugar!) While he was here, I decided to put him to work! He read a few words in English, and then taught the kids the words in Spanish. These kids love learning! I love teaching them words in Spanish, and their innocence and "I'm not embarassed about anything" attitude, really allows them to learn!

They learned LION  & PIG in Spanish!

Singing Science!

We are learning all about the SKY, and to introduce the topic, we sang a song! How much fun! I have some REAL singers in this class. Love days like this.

Newsletter for Week of 9/6-9/9

Reading:

Oh my, what a short week! We read our story of the week “Big Rigs” and we practiced the chunk sounds: /ig/ and /in/ in words like pig, dig, and pin, and win. We also practiced classifying and categorizing different things.

Math:

We ventured in the world of SUBTRACTION! We practiced take-away number stories, all week long. We also practiced on our whiteboards taking away from a group. It is a great strategy to draw a picture, and then take away from the picture.

Science:

We finished Land & Water. My oh my, did we learn about Land & Water! We learned about volcanoes, earth quakes, erosion, and landslides!

Writing:

We just started going over Small Moment stories in the class, and practiced how to get our thoughts onto paper.

In Honor of 9-11

Well, to tell a bunch of students, who were not even born yet, all about 9-11, was quite challenging. They were sad, yet very curious.Their innocence about the topic was almost refreshing. I sensitively read different picture books about the day, and then we talked about feelings, and how it might have been very scary for 1^st graders in NYC. We also talked about how fortunate we are to live in America, where we are free. It was a very intriguing day for the students, learning about that day, and why we call it Patriot Day.

I had one student tell me with such pride, “my Mommy and Daddy, they were both Marines and they fought for our country!” That made me so happy to see her so proud of her parents, and their very brave and courageous dedication to our Armed Forces.

Grand Ole Flag

We made flags, with a poem, which we will send home after they are displayed in the hall for a little while!

Hallway of Heroes

We also talked about HEROES in our community, and how HEROES played a big part on that horrible day. I asked the students to think about HEROES in their life, and then we will illustrate/write about our personal HEROES and display them in the hallway.
